Thoughts on new Rail Hub
JamesOfJames talks too much
Hokay, so. I did some math, and if we play by the rules, the distance from corner to corner of this map will be 5,793m. (Or just under 8,200m if you don't like diagonals.) So from a central rail station, terra-side, the longest trip you'd take should be approximately half those figures - 2,897m and 4,096m respectively. To me, those distances seem manageable, but there's no compelling reason (to my mind) to not chop those numbers down by putting all the long-distance transit Netherside. Netherside, the map's bounds would run from (256, 256) to (-256, -256).
Since we don't really know where people will want to go yet, I'd propose (for now) to at least build a convenient portal at ZP to allow Nether access, and mining/building 4 stone-walled walking paths in each cardinal direction. Later, we could add 4 more on the diagonals. In the future, nether-ZP could be the site of a smaller CNS, primarily serving regional hubs. under-ZP would be an excellent site for the central regional hub, something along the lines of a 32-slot GCS? I've never cared for having to translate from decimal to binary when selecting destinations from GCS, so if we use that template, could we label tracks in both (for the benefit of us mental weaklings/liberal arts grads?)
I also prototyped an alternate system, which would have been used at WD, on my server. It's more logic-intense and a bit of a pain to set up, but it has the benefit of being push-button operated. Select a destination with a button press, place a cart in the launcher, hit the button to go. You return along a parallel line, putting you right back in the launcher. If you'd like to check it out, I'd certainly appreciate feedback - Fo0bar, randomsnark, levtastic, lolcam, spenguin, and some others are whitelisted at 108.4.5.130 (It will say there's a communication error, but never fear.)--JamesOfJames 07:52, 16 December 2011 (PST)
